Spain is considered the finest trophy-hunt destination in all of Europe. Big game includes up to 13 species, 7 of which are exclusive to Spain.
There
are 3 modalities to big-game hunting; Rececho, Monteria or driven hunt
and waiting hunt.
El
rececho or
stalking: Consists in finding the animals visually,if necessary,
with the help of binoculars. Once you have chosen your prey the stalking
begins, you either approach or wait for it to come closer. It is important
to calculate the minimum distance required to shoot it down with one shot.
La
montería or
driven-hunt: One of the most exciting kinds of hunt in the world.
An ancestral tradition that consists in surrounding an area with beaters
and dogs used to force the game out of the valley of thick brush towards
the line of prepositioned shooters.
Good shooting skills are required, as game is almost constantly running
at full speed to escape from dogs. Fast reloading for next shots is also
important. When dogs attack wounded game, hunter is not allowed to shoot.
La espera is a waiting hunt and is done either from a high seat or from a small "hide" at ground level either in the late afternoon or early evening.
